Event Description

Farrukh Khan is a senior Pakistani diplomat. He joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1995. He has served in several national and international positions, including Chef De Cabinet and Deputy Chef De Cabinet to the 75th President of the UN General Assembly and Senior Manager (Climate Finance) at the Executive Office of the then UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. He has been the Director General of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), and Economic Coordination and Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has also served in the Pakistan Missions to the UN in Geneva and New York.

He was Pakistan’s lead negotiator on Climate Change during 2010-2014 and spokesperson for the developing world at Rio +20 Conference (2012). He led international negotiations on establishing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN High-Level Political Forum. Later, he co-chaired the UNEP Working Group that established the UNEP’s World Environment Assembly.

Mr. Khan was a member (later its Chairperson) of the Adaptation Fund Board. He has also served as a member of the Green Climate Fund Board and the International Transitional Committee that designed the Green Climate Fund. Currently, he is a member of the Governing Board of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (IC-VCM) and co-chair of its Standard Oversight Committee.

Amongst his academic positions, he serves as Visiting Scholar with the Perry World House, University of Pennsylvania, and non-resident Advisor to the International Institute of Peace (IPI). He served as Senior Fellow with the Mossavar-Rehmani Center for Government and Business at the Harvard Kennedy School.

He is a Columbia University (USA) graduate in International Affairs and Law. He did his law and economics undergrad at the University of Punjab (Pakistan).
